CarPlay / Android Auto isn’t compatible with the base composition media system. You’ll need a car with at least NAV for it to work. If it isn’t activated already it’s about £200 from a dealer to set up.
There are 3 tiers of infotainment:
- Composition Media
- Discover NAV
- Discover Pro NAV
Discover Pro NAV is the one with the big screen. There are 2 versions MIB1 or MIB2 but not sure how you tell as the diss play is the same.
The Composition Media and Discover NAV are easily identified. The earlier MIB1 systems have gloss piano black plastic inside the screen, MIB2 does not.
In the newer cars from late 2016 early 2017 onwards, Composition Media was dropped and replaced with Discover NAV as standard. CarPlay and Android Auto are also standard.
If you want CarPlay to avoid a car that doesn’t have NAV. Mine is a 2016 build car and I opted for Composition Media as I didn’t need NAV as I always use my phone and it’s impossible for me to have CarPlay fitted as it’s not compatible with the system I have. Had I got the basic NAV it would have been fine.
All cars built later than BW22 2015 have MIB2 - That's early June 2015.
Any car that's 65 plates onwards should have MIB2 unless it was sat around waiting to be registered
All pro units have a built-in the hard drive and NAV they also have two available SD slots
Composition units have two SD slots but one of them is used for the nav maps it has Nav. All MIB2 can have car play. Pro units should already be active, the composition may have to be activated (for a charge) by the dealer if it hasn't been done already or it was specs at the time of order. Car play is limited to apple maps by apple, it's not controlled by VW. Waze is on Android Auto.
MIB 1, MIB 2 High HDD navigation systems can be identified by checking the MMI Software version, you can do this by going into Setup MMI -> Version information. Compatible software versions always begin with MHI, please see examples below:
If you are unsure which navigation system your car is fitted with, please check this tutorial.
